Assistant Professor of Creative Writing

The Linfield English Department is recruiting for an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing to begin July 1, 2017. Our department celebrates the literary arts both through the work of established writers and the work-in-progress of students becoming writers. Our interconnected majors - one in literature and one in creative writing - blend emphases on traditional foci like periodicity and genre with attention to contemporary literary theory and trends in the production of 21st century literary media.  Just as Linfield as a whole values and promotes diversity and inclusion at all levels, the eight members of the English Department boast a diversity of backgrounds as well as academic and creative interests.  Together we share a commitment to the vibrant student-centered learning environment that characterizes our community. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach a wide range of undergraduate creative writing courses, including introduction to creative writing and upper division courses in at least two genres (preferably poetry and fiction).
  • Teach a section of the first year Inquiry Seminar and literature courses as appropriate to training as part of an annual five-course load.
  • Advise and mentor students in academic and career planning.
  • Maintain an active writing life that directly fosters publication, curricular development, teaching expertise, and program development and administration.
  • Perform normal responsibilities of a faculty member at a liberal arts college, including service to the college and the department.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MFA or Ph.D. in creative writing in hand or completed by July 1, 2017
  • Strong publication record and expertise across at least two genres, preferably poetry and fiction.
  • Evidence of an ongoing, engaged writing life.
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduates in a face-to-face setting
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for a liberal arts undergraduate experience.
  • Capacity to contribute to the department's commitment to diversity and inclusion in curriculum and student outreach (Candidates with experience in any of the following literatures encouraged to apply: Pacific Rim; African American; Latino/Latina; LGBTQ; Disability).
  • Capacity for service supporting the creative writing program and addressing the needs of a small department as well as the wider college community.  

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 

Initial Application Phase:

Candidates should complete the online application and attach the following documents:

  • Professional C.V.
  • Cover letter (addressed to Barbara Kitt Seidman, English Department Chair) explaining: the candidate's qualifications; undergraduate teaching philosophy and experience; current writing interests/projects; ways the applicant's teaching, creative work and service will support Linfield's mission of diversity and inclusion.
  • Screening begins October 1; applications accepted through October 16, 2016.

Second Phase:

Selected applicants will be asked to submit a complete dossier between November 1-14 to include:

  • Unofficial transcripts of all college and university work
  • Sample of creative work not exceeding 20 pages and 4mb (electronic submissions only)
  • Teaching evaluations if available
  • Three current letters of recommendation

Third Phase:

Semi-finalists will be notified by December 7 and invited to Skype interviews with the search committee during the week of December 12-16 (NOTE: The department will not be conducting convention interviews at MLA or AWP.)  Campus interviews for finalists will be conducted in February 2017.
