Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts in Scenic and Lighting Design

Linfield College, an undergraduate liberal arts institution, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts in Scenic and Lighting Design to begin July 2018. This faculty member will focus on and provide leadership in the design facet of the theatre program. An MFA in scenic design completed by August 2018 required. Experience in scenic and lighting design required. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in scenic and lighting design and related topics, designing scenery and lighting for up to four main stage productions annually, and engaging in professional activity. Linfield College enrolls a diverse student body; 60% of students are New Majority students composed of students of color, first-generation, transfer, and Pell-eligible students. All applicants must demonstrate a promise of excellence in working with students from diverse backgrounds. Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2018, and continue until April 15, 2018

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Teach undergraduate theatre courses, including scenic design, lighting design, fundamentals of theatre design and drawing, and topics in theatre design and technology.
  • Design scenery and lighting for up to four productions annually.
  • Teach other courses in areas of theatre expertise.
  • Contribute to the Theatre Program's diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Mentor students as an advisor in academic and career planning.
  • Maintain professional artistic program or otherwise pursue professional achievement beyond teaching and service.
  • Perform other responsibilities as appropriate for a faculty member at a liberal arts college, including assisting with student recruitment and participation in faculty governance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  MFA in Scenic Design by August 2018                   

  • Successful teaching at the collegiate level, including theatre design courses;
  • Success in scenic and lighting design at the collegiate level, including engagement with emerging design technologies;
  • Ability to teach traditional design practices and innovative design skills;
  • Skill with projection and automation design and designing for new and devised works;
  • A collaborative approach to a general theatre education that values development of students with a broad range of knowledge and skills in theatre performance, production, and scholarship;
  • Effective mentoring of undergraduate students including New Majority students (students of color, first-generation, transfer, and Pell-eligible students);
  • Ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse students;
  • A commitment to experiential learning and dynamic pedagogical practice;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills that demonstrate collaborative engagement with students and colleagues;
  • Multi-discipline approaches to creative projects;
  • Breadth of educational background, with experience that values critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and interdisciplinary work preferred;
  • Dedication to institutional and community service.
