Instructional Associate - Wine Studies

POSITION: Ten-month, full time Instructional Associate position

STARTING DATE: August 15, 2019



The Evenstad Center for Wine Education delivers America's leading comprehensive, four-year liberal arts Wine Studies program, promoting the best in global standards, advancing sound, ethical, and sustainable business practices, and instilling a passion for always doing the right things the right way. Wine Studies students at Linfield College obtain knowledge about the history, culture, production, business, science and appreciation of wine. Courses in this major encourage understanding and critical analysis of the cultural, social and economic significance of wine in Oregon and around the world. Students who complete a major in Wine Studies are well prepared for graduate studies in viticulture, enology or wine business and well positioned to pursue careers in the wine industry or the hospitality industry. Linfield College invites applications for position at the Instructor level in Wine Studies. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business or a related field, along with wine industry experience is required. Strong candidates will have expertise in aspects of wine appreciation, basic to intermediate viticulture and winemaking, sensory evaluation, and wine sales, marketing, and management. Additional areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to, social media, digital media, hospitality and event management, tourism, and many food and beverage areas.



  • Prepare and teach a wide range of courses in Wine Studies to a diverse student population based on the department's course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of students and the standards of the discipline.
  • Assist students as an advisor in academic and career planning.
  • Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner that does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice president, vice president, executive vice president.



Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom. Demonstrated familiarity using an online learning management system such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).



  • Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
  • Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
  • Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in the college.



  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Viticulture, Enology, or related field.
  • Five or more years of experience working in the wine sector.
  • Prior teaching or training experience.
  • Ability to relate well to colleagues, students, and staff in a small college.
  • Knowledge of the Oregon wine industry.



  • Master's degree in Business, Viticulture, Enology, or related field.
  • Prior teaching experience at the college level.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Oregon wine industry.

RANK and COMPENSATION: Instructional Associate, ten-month renewable position contingent upon enrollment and job performance; with benefits and salary that is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and Linfield salary scale.
