Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor in Journalism and Media Studies

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Linfield College invites applications for a three-year, full-time visiting faculty position to begin in August 2020. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach a variety of theoretical and applied-skills courses, with particular expertise in journalism.

The department graduates approximately 10-15 majors and 2-3 minors each year. Journalism and Media Studies students engage with media from multiple perspectives in the program's wide range of courses, which combine the theory and practice of mediated communication to complement Linfield's liberal arts education. Students customize the flexible curriculum to pursue their individual interests in journalism, entertainment and/or strategic communication. The program prepares students for a variety of careers in reporting, editing, media production, public relations, and advertising, as well as for graduate study.

POSITION

The primary responsibility of this position is to teach a variety of journalism and media studies courses, including the introductory course, Living in a Media World; Introduction to Media Writing; Journalism Practices; and advanced writing courses Reporting and/or Feature Writing. The ability to teach some of the following courses is also necessary: Principles of Journalism; Media Law; Sports Reporting; Electronic Media Writing; Media Theory and Criticism; Introduction to Film; Political Communication; Multimedia Storytelling; Media and Popular Culture; Social Media Theory and Practice; and Media Research Methods. The ideal candidate will also be qualified to teach one or more media-production courses (multimedia, video, audio, graphic design and/or photojournalism). Most of these courses are offered on a once-a-year or once-every-other-year rotation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses, as well. Other responsibilities include serving as the advisor to the student news organization, assisting students as an advisor in academic and career planning, and performing limited departmental service duties. Excellence in teaching and mentoring of students is expected.

Visiting professors are expected to carry a teaching load of 6 courses plus additional work with students, over the whole academic year (two semesters plus a January Term).

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have professional experience in journalism and demonstrated competence in college-level teaching. A master's degree is required, though a Ph.D. is preferred, with the degree completed before the August 25, 2020. The candidate should be able to relate well with diverse colleagues, students and staff in a small-college environment.
